Size

The Col Smith has a classic single fin outline with extra foam under your chest which turns it into a paddling machine. The deep channels allow for maximum drive through long, bottom turns and smooth high-lines. The pin tail provides maximum hold in fast, down the line waves. The way these channels are shaped defies the usual expectations of most other channel bottoms - the channel system allows water to flow freely through the tail of the board between turns, and makes for a very manoeuvrable single fin. Best for 2 ft to 10 ft waves. All in all this is a timeless single fin that would fit great in your quiver.

The Free Flight 6 channel single fin is an exact replica of the 'Col Smith' design that Phil shaped from 1979-1982. It was used by legends of those days such as the late Col Smith, also Michael Ho, Hans Hedeman, Tony White and Kevin Davidson. This was just before Simon Anderson released the 'Thruster' in 1983. The design was pushing the boundaries of single fin surfboard design. The model was used to great success in professional contests especially in Hawaii and powerful conditions.

Check out his interview with Swell Net Here and a great little interview with Phil about himself here.

The ideal volume of your board is generated based on your weight, ability, fitness level, experience and age. For example, older surfers and beginners tend to choose something with a higher volume, as this equates to more paddle power. The below chart will help you choose how much volume (Litres) you will want in your new surfboard.
